What Is A Speed Awareness Course?

A speed awareness course is a specially designed course which aims to explore the reasons why drivers exceed speed limits, the consequences which speeding may bring, and ways in how future re-occurrence may be prevented. It is offered to low-level speeding offenders as an option as opposed to just a fixed penalty notice.

Derbyshire’s Speed Awareness Course

The CREST team launched speed awareness during February 2008.
The course is offered as an alternative to a fixed penalty (3 points and £60 fine) to all low-level speeding offences generated from Derbyshire’s Fixed and Mobile safety cameras. The Course consists of a four hour interactive presentation and discussion on all aspects of driving and speed control in particular, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The total course duration is approximately 4 hours. The current price for the course is £92 inclusive of VAT. (Prices are subject to change)

Am I Eligible?

Once a driver is nominated for a particular speeding offence, correspondence will be issued by the Derbyshire CREST Team stating that a speed awareness course can be completed as an option, as opposed to receiving a fixed penalty notice. Note, speed awareness courses will only be offered to drivers who have not taken a course in the past three years. Courses are only offered up to the upper threshold shown below.

In Derbyshire there are two venues where we run speed awareness courses. These are located in Chesterfield and Derby.
