Camera Types

Camera Types

Fixed, mobile and red light safety cameras are operated on Derbyshire's roads.

Fixed Cameras

Derbyshire uses two types of fixed cameras: Gatso and Truvelo.

Gatso Camera Gatso Camera

Use radar to detect the speed of oncoming vehicles and photograph the rear of vehicles.

Truvelo Camera Truvelo Cameras

Use sensors embedded in the road to measure the speed of oncoming vehicles and have the facility to photograph the front or rear of vehicles.

There are 117 fixed safety camera housings in Derbyshire and around 100 mobile safety camera sites.

All of the cameras are located at collision hotspots that have a history of casualties. Every fixed camera is bright yellow and is visible from 60 yards in 40mph and below speed limit zones, and 100 yards in all other speed limit zones.

All fixed camera routes are signed so that road users are aware that safety cameras are in use on that route.

Mobile Cameras

Four mobile safety camera vehicles are operated at around 100 sites across Derbyshire. The cameras, which are usually operated through the rear windows of the vans, use a laser device to measure the speed of vehicles coming towards or travelling away from the camera. The vehicles all bear the 'Safety Camera Team' livery, which identifies to road users that cameras are in operation.

Two mobile Gatso safety cameras, which are operated at the roadside on a tripod, are also used at a number of sites.

All mobile routes are signed so road users are aware that there are safety cameras in operation on that route.

Red Light Cameras

One red light safety camera is currently in operation in Derbyshire. Red Light cameras are designed to detect road users who drive through red lights at traffic signals.
