Speed Information

Excessive and inappropriate speed is a major contributory factor in road collisions and casualties. The impact of speed-related collisions and casualties is huge, not only in the amount of emotional and physical pain caused to those involved, but also in a financial sense. It is estimated that the financial cost of road traffic collisions to the community of Derbyshire is in excess of £270 million each year.

Type Cost per casualty Cost per collision
Fatal £1,089,130 £1,262,090
Serious £122,380 £146,890
Slight £34,540 £49,920

Road traffic collisions put a massive strain on the resources of the emergency services and the NHS. Derbyshire Police deal with 25 road traffic collisions every day.

Huge amounts of NHS resources are used to care and treat people involved in road traffic collisions. For the cost of a serious road collision, your hospital could provide:

Reduce Your Speed

If the number of speed related collisions and casualties could be reduced, this would allow resources that are currently used to respond to road traffic collisions and treat road traffic casualties to be redirected into other areas.

Speed Facts

The penalty for being caught breaking the speed limit is 3 penalty points, and a £60 fine, or a request to appear at court.

In a collision, if a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle at 30 mph they would have an 80% chance of survival. If they were hit at 40mph they would have a 90% chance of death.

If travelling at 20mph and you hit a child, that child is likely to survive and may be uninjured.

The casualty rate at night is double that of the daylight rate.
